GENERAL MEMBERSHIP TRACK BALLAD VISUAL DESIGN: STYLES AND SUPPORT – Who among us has not dreamed of moving an audience to tears or rousing them out of their seats with the performance of a truly passionate ballad? This class will help us learn how to do just that – how to make our ballads come alive on stage and in the hearts of our chorus members and our audiences. We will learn new tools and new ideas for understanding the style of the ballad and how to truly “sell” that style, and how to physically and emotionally “set up” the performance. BASIC CHOREOGRAPHY MOVES – Every visual plan starts with a good design and every good design consists of meaningful basic choreography movements. Explore with our guest faculty, Cindy Hansen, ten basic choreography movements that any chorus member can learn and that can serve as the foundation of any visual plan. Cindy will cover what the moves are, how to teach them for success, how they can be combined for simple routines, how to modify them to the song style, and how to work them into your warm-ups. CHAPTER-AT-LARGE (CAL) FORUM – Are you a CAL member? Is Region 21 meeting your needs? In an open forum session, we invite you to help us develop a plan to support your needs as we discuss ways to keep you in-the-loop, use your dues assessment, and explore ways to utilize your expertise within the region. We want to hear from YOU! Pick up your lunch pre-order form at the deli or at our registration table, complete the form, and take it to the deli Saturday morning before our sessions begin. DIRECTOR CERTIFICATION PROGRAM (DCP) OVERVIEW – Spend some time with regional Directors Coordinator, Andi Rostel, and learn how you can benefit from the DCP. It’s not just for directors! This modular, home-study program can help you build your musical skills so you can become a better singer, chorus member, quartet member and musical leader. DIRECTORS’ PANEL – This session, led by Director’s Coordinator, Andi Rostel, is for front-line directors to have the opportunity to share and learn from one another through discussion, Q & A, and networking. If you were unable to attend the Directors Seminar in June, you may bring your director video from the 2008 Spring Convention for critique. The panel is preceded by a Directors’ Lunch. Pick up your lunch pre-order form at the deli or at our registration table, complete the form, and take it to the deli Saturday morning before our sessions begin. FINANCE COORDINATORS FORUM – Meet with Regional Finance Coordinator, Charlene Neblett, to discuss the latest Sweet Adeline financial management news and network about all things monetary! This is your chance to ask those important treasurer/financial coordinator questions, get the correct answer, pick others’ brains, and share your latest spreadsheet idea! MAKING THE MUSIC BETTER – We all know that “the song comes first” and all good visual plans enhance the music. This class teaches exactly how to ensure that this happens! Learn how to layer in your visual plan to your songs so that the musical plan is enhanced and good vocal production is ensured. Cindy will also discuss how dynamics, tempo and other expression devices are affected – for the good and bad – by choreography. MARKETING HAPPY HOUR – BYOB and marketing materials! Come to the second annual Marketing Happy Hour and bring a marketing piece that makes you happy. It might be a flyer for a show that was very effective, a Pennysaver ad that brought in 20 potential new members, or press coverage of your chorus. Heck, it might even be an ad for Nordstrom. We’ll analyze what makes it great and learn what “best practices” we can adopt for our own marketing materials. This fun and relaxing session is open to everyone involved in chorus PR/Marketing – or anyone who wants to learn more about how to get your message across. MEMBERSHIP FORUM – No matter what the size or personality of your group, every chorus wants to have a membership base large enough to allow it to perform well. Every member plays a role in the growth of your chapter! Chapter membership chairs and committee members are especially invited to attend this forum where we will learn from one another by sharing ideas for membership growth and retention. The key is acknowledging that each member can make a difference – it starts with YOU! MUSIC THEORY REVIEW FOR DCP CANDIDATES – This class is designed for individuals enrolled in the Director’s Certification Program (DCP), and will provide a review of the music theory component of the program prior to the Sunday morning DCP testing. PRESIDENTS/TEAM COORDINATORS FORUM – Discover some of the things all choruses have in common, regardless of their size. Bring your ideas, questions and concerns, and learn from each other. We will also include a brief training to help build and enhance your leadership skills. This is YOUR opportunity to grow, network and make a difference! REGIONAL TOWN HALL MEETING – We’ll gather together for this moderated discussion of a broad range of regional topics of interest to YOU! Your questions, feedback and suggestions with regard to all things “regional” will be solicited and addressed. This is your chance to talk to your regional leaders and get all your burning questions answered! Constructive input is always welcomed and desired! SIGHTSINGING: AS EASY AS 1, 2, 3! – Are you sight reading challenged?? Does learning new music in section or quartet rehearsals cause you to break out in a cold sweat? Sightsinging using the “number method” is perfect for learning barbershop music. Learn how to determine where "doh" is located on the staff and how to sing all scaler tones in any key, in any order! Easy as pie! SINGING TOGETHER AT REGIONAL – This class is our opportunity to sing together as one really big chorus, to learn a fabulous new regional song called “The Winners Song” and to review our regional songs repertoire. Remember to bring your copies of the regional repertoire music with you to Summer Seminar! Our 2008 Regional Quartet Champs will lead us as a group in learning/reviewing the songs and we will sing them throughout the weekend together, as well as whenever we meet in the years to come! STAGE MAKE-UP 101 – Join Certified International Faculty member Lynne Smith in this very informative class that explores the eternal question “Just how much make-up is enough for the stage?” The 2007 contest judges felt our region needed instruction on “how much is enough” and Lynne Smith is here to set us straight! Lynne’s class will teach us the differences between everyday, performance and stage make-up application and how to apply your stage make-up to perfectly enhance the musical performance. Attending this class can earn you more points at your next contest! SUCCESSFULLY TEACHING YOUR VISUAL PLAN – Does it seem to take your chorus too long to learn your visual plans, or is it difficult to convey the true meaning of your plan to them? This class is for you, as it will cover the “dos and don’ts” of teaching showmanship. You will learn how to teach with speed and success, how to motivate your members, how to deal with difficult individuals, slow learners, teaching to the risers versus the front row. Learn how to make the visual learning process more productive and worthwhile! TAG, YOU’RE IT! – Tag singers (and who ISN’T?), this is the place to be if you’ve been missing the opportunity to ring those chords in your favorite tags! At this Arranger Development Program (ADP) sponsored event, we’ll come together to learn our parts and blend our voices in rousing chord worshipping. You’re sure to learn some great new tags to add to your repertoire. Baris especially welcome! UPTUNE VISUAL DESIGN – Do you ever feel as though you’ve completely run out of ideas for physically representing and delivering the message of your uptunes? Then this class is for you! We will explore how different uptune styles require different visual plans – one size does not fit all! We’ll learn where to get choreography/showmanship ideas and how best to use them to enhance the musical plan. What works, what doesn’t…what more do you need to know? VISUAL TEAM ORGANIZATIONAL DESIGN – Every great chorus has great visual performances and they are the creation of great chorus visual teams. Learn how the great ones work together to achieve their success: the roles that need to be filled, the responsibilities that must be met, and the successful methods of interacting within the team and with your directors, coaches and chorus members. WHEN TO MAKE IT FUNNY – This class will explore exactly how to use comedy in your chorus or quartet performances. There really is such a thing as good comedy and bad comedy and we need to know the difference! The class will delve into the successful use of parody, jokes and story telling. A must-attend class for all who wish to make their performances more entertaining. YOGA FOR SINGERS – A strong, flexible and relaxed body is the optimal singing instrument. Join Monique Manifold as she leads the class through a series of yoga stretches specifically designed to strengthen the singer’s body. She will also explain additional methods for keeping your instrument in tip-top singing shape! YOUNG WOMEN IN HARMONY (YWIH) TRACK: HOW TO BE A GOOD TENOR, LEAD, BARI, BASS – Join Region 21’s own Hypnotic Quartet as they examine the unique characteristics of each quartet part and its role in barbershop harmony. You each have a special place and job in the barbershop sound. Learn how to be good at it…perhaps even GREAT! THE INS & OUTS OF QUARTETING – What does it really mean to be a “quartet member?” Once in a quartet, what happens next? In this class you will learn how to organize your quartet, make sure all the mundane non-singing responsibilities are handled, plan and conduct rehearsals, and prepare for competitions and performances. All you need to know, but were afraid to ask, will be answered in this class! CHOREOGRAPHY: HUH? – This class focuses on the who, what, when, how and why of movement and physical expression in barbershop quartet performance. Learn how a good visual plan enhances the musical performance and promotes vocal and physical freedom. This interactive class will teach you how to be a performer, not “just a singer!” PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER: COACHING MASTER CLASS – Queen of Harmony Tomi McEvoy will help you take what you’ve learned in the first three track classes and put it all to work in your music and performance! Each quartet will have an opportunity to be coached on one song in front of the class by Tomi. This is a wonderful opportunity to receive one-on-one feedback from an accomplished Sweet Adeline quartet singer and share the learning experience with your fellow quartets. The perfect finishing touch to help you prepare for your Saturday evening Showcase performance! |
